Open Beats

Concept

In 2016, I was awarded a grant to participate in Neighborhood Lights, a series of satellite installations for the first ever LightCity festival. Selected by the Greater Mondawmin neighborhood as their resident artist, I led a team to create “Open Beats”, an interactive audio and visual installation.

Open Beats empowered participants through play. Anyone young or old could create improvised beats via a custom interface, while simultaneously triggering projection mapped visuals. It was important to me that anyone could enjoy this without prior knowledge of the technology behind the scenes.

I accomplished this by routing audio and video signals through Resolume and Ableton, using OSC and MIDI.

Throughout the project I leveraged the skills of fellow collaborators including music production from local collective Llamadon, fabrication from Felipe Goncalves and classroom instruction by Kariz Marcel.

I organized a workshop at ConneXions Academy where our team introduced students to various production tools. Audio recordings from the workshop were then featured in OpenBeats and mixed into the music performances.

Open Beats was active on 4/1/2016 at the Mondawmin Mall and saw roughly 400 attendees.
